Big Emmy Nominees: "Mildred Pierce," "Game of Thrones" and "Mad Men"

Mildred Pierce, Boardwalk Empire and my personal favorite, Game of Thrones, did very well when the primetime Emmy nominations were announced this morning. So did Mad Men, The Good Wife, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

I'm thrilled with the nominations for Game of Thones and especially Peter Dinklage for Best Supporting Actor in the series.  In fact the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama category is a strong one.  Joining Dinklage are Josh Charles and Alan Cumming for The Good Wife, John Slattery for Mad Men and Andre Braugher for Men of A Certain Age.

Some wonderful surprises: Johnny Galecki getting his first nomination for The Big Bang Theory; likewise, Melissa McCarthy, who was announcing the nominations with Fringe's Joshua Jackson, and gasped in delight as Jackson read out her name.

McCarthy's always done great work--remember her from Gilmore Girls as Sookie St James?--and this year she's gotten extra buzz because of her comic turn in the movie Bridesmaids.

The nominations for Friday Night Lights were a bit of a surprise because since it airs primarily on DirectTV, it's off most viewers' radar.  The same goes for the miniseries, The Kennedys, which got 10 nominations and which almost didn't air at all because of controversies about how the Kennedys were portrayed, and then got panned by most critics.

Here are the top categories:

Snub City

At a glance the most obvious snub is Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer, and why she couldn't eject Mariska Hargitay from her yearly slot, I'll never know, but all the other nominees in the category are perfectly legit.

HBO was the leading network with 104 nominations.  The broadcast network nominations were CBS: 50, PBS: 43, NBC: 46, Fox: 42, and ABC: 40. Even Oprah's brand new OWN network got three nominations for Becoming Chaz.

PBS's outstanding Downton Abbey came in with 11 nominations including one acting nod for Elizabeth McGovern.  Also on PBS, the marvelous Sherlock, a modern day version of Sherlock Holmes, got nominations for writing, editing and music composition.

You can see the complete list of Emmy nominations on the Emmy website. The 63rd annual Emmy awards show will air on September 18th at 8pm on Fox.
