Christmas in August on "Mad Men:" What A Hoot!
It was Christmas on Mad Men last night and boy was it a hoot!
First, the austere little office party had to turn into a full blown Roman orgy when the head of Lucky Strike--the firm's largest, and almost only client--decided to invite himself over.
Complete with conga lines and Joanie dressed in the client's favorite red dress with the bow in the back--the one that makes her look like a Christmas present, as Roger says--the party is an expensive hit.
In a fit of self-pity and alcohol, Don (Jon Hamm) sleeps with his lovely and sweet secretary and then gives her another large Christmas bonus the next day--if you know what I mean. At least he didn't give her the pink slip I was half expecting.
On the Betty Draper (January Jones) home front, last year it was creepy little Sally Draper (Kiernan Shipka) and this year we have the return of Creepy Glenn! You remember Glenn, the kid down the street who had an unnaturally obsessive crush on good ol' Bets. She seemed to see him as some kind of surrogate husband/son and he wished he was 20 years older so he could sweep in and protect her.
Well Glenn's attentions have now turned to this year's new and improved Sally. She's less creepy and more sympathetic now that Mommy has dumped Daddy and married a high powered politico with an unwelcoming family.
And I guess Glenn's decided if he can't have Mommy, he'll settle for the daughter. He recruits a friend to help him vandalism the Draper homestead--all except Sally's room, in an effort to get Bets to agree to move, something Sally desperately wants.
On the Peggy (Elizabeth Moss) front, our career girl has her poor beau believing she's a virgin and shy about doing the nasty. Oh man! How does she keep a straight face as he's instructing her on the sexual mores in Sweden? I know I couldn't.
When she finally gives in he's all, "Are you okay, honey?"
Mister, you do not know what you're getting into. Get out now!
Oh, and Freddy Rumsen returned with his ex-alcoholic self, his Ponds cold cream account and his really old fashioned campaign ideas.
This year's Mad Men? Two for two.
