"It's Complicated," It's Funny
First, can I just tell you how thrilled I am to see Meryl Streep everywhere these days? Her "second film career" is going like gangbusters and I couldn't be happier for her or for us.
In the comedy "It's Complicated" she plays a divorcee, Jane who begins an affair with her ex-husband of ten years. The ex, Jake, played with sufficient hammy hilarity by Alec Baldwin, is married to the drip of a young chippie he left Jane for. She's got very little going for her except a slammin' body.
Jane meanwhile has got everything else and I'll bet her body ain't so bad either. She's also lovely, luminous and very touching. And that's because of Meryl Streep.
Enter Steve Martin as Adam, Jane's low-key architect. He develops a thing for Jane but unfortunately she can't even remember her appointments with him. She's too busy taking care of her cafe and agonizing over her attraction to Jake.
Jake is a hound dog who wants whatever he doesn't have. Yeah he still has a little thing for Jane but the whole relationship is more about him having what's no longer his. Case in point, he took back the Slammin' Body even after she left him for someone else and got pregnant.
Add in Jane and Jake's kids and their reactions to the affair and you've got a cute little comedy.
Yep, it's funny but in a sweet, chuckling kind of way. There is however one very good laugh out loud moment that's worth the price of a ticket. I won't spoil it for you but let's just say it has something to do with a webcam and a laptop.
Streep, Martin and Baldwin bring a level of quality to the proceedings that would be missing with a less experienced cast, and as a bonus you also get a preview of Martin and Baldwin as Oscar co-hosts. You could do a lot worse with your ten bucks.
Enjoy.
