The 2009 Emmys Didn't Suck!

61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Show

What can I say, the 61st Primetime Emmys didn't suck!

Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, the show moved--except for a sharp dip during the variety/reality section. The set was a visual delight, there was very little awkward presenter banter mements and more importantly, the show was fun.

Harris was smart and adorable.  His opening "Put Down The Remote" musical number was really funny and would have stood up with any of Billy Crystal's best Oscar opening numbers.  Finally, he did what every good host should do, do your thing and then stay out of the way.

What else did I think about the show?  I'm glad you asked.

Stuff I Loved:

  • Very cool, glitzy, multi-level set.  Especially loved the pixalized screens on stage with shots of all the stars and nominees.
  • Pacing of the show was good except for the variety segment.  The dance number was short, but not short enough.
  • The four box shots showing the stage, backstage, the press room and the control room.
  • Ricky Gervais.
  • Realizing I wasn't the only one who thought Dearbhla Walsh who won for directing "Little Dorrit" desperately needed a bra.  There were at least a hundred tweets saying the same thing.
  • Dr. Horrible skit where he explained that TV is dead because the internet is so much faster...but then his video pauses while it buffers.

2001 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Winners I Was Thrilled About:

  • Michael Emerson for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for "Lost."  How classy was that speech?  So un-Ben-like.
  • Cherry Jones for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for "24."
  • Shohreh Aghdashloo.  She's got that lovely, deep, sexy voice, though it sounded like she might have needed some major oxygen as she made her speech.
  • Ken Howard for "Grey Gardens."  That's right, the "White Shadow" himself.  He hoped his speech wouldn't be interupted by "a congressman or a rapper."  His toup looked particularly good also.
  • I was happy "Mad Men" took home Best Drama, but next year baby..."Lost!"

Great Lines:
  • On "30 Rock" he learned "comedy is just drama with less smoking."  Jon Hamm.
  • On winning as Best Reality Host, Jeff Probst got philosophical, "If you have a dream, dream big, pursue it with a passion.  In the words of the great storyteller Joseph Campbell, 'The adventure you're ready for is the one you get.  Life is short, go for it.'"
  • "That's right, sofa monkeys."  Dr. Horrible.
  • "You guys gave the award to the nerdiest, ugliest, people, um, we apologize for that."  One of the winners for the opening of the "Oscars." They beat out Justin Timberlake, so he was right.
  • "In this room, I'm probably above average.  Steve Carrell is considered handsome."  The marvelous Ricky Gervais when talking about how much better looking "film stars" are.
  • "One day I flew to Hawaii to do a guest spot and four years later it's become the role of my lifetime." Michael Emerson after winning for "Lost."

Stuff I Hated:

  • A whole segment for two reality show categories.
  • Putting the Parade of Dead People right after a crowd pleasing win.  It should have it's own segment with commercials before and after.  However it was nice to have Sarah McLachlan sing her dirge in person.
  • The rambling voice over as the winners walked up to the stage.  Too much stuff going on and no one was listening to it.  The walk isn't that far, we won't get bored, just shut up.
  • NPH getting robbed again for "How I Met Your Mother."
  • Hugh Laurie getting robbed again for "House."
  • You're running over anyway, just show the clips for Best Drama Actors.

But overall, it didn't suck.
