French Open 2009: Roger Federer Finally Conquers Paris!
The 2009 French Open is over and not only has a new men's and women's champion been decided, but tennis history was made.
By winning the men's tournament Roger Federer completed a career Grand Slam and tied the record of all time men's Grand Slam titles at fourteen.
And as far as I'm concerned, he's cemented his place as the best men's player to ever pick up a racquet. Hands down. No question. No discussion.
Andre Agassi was there to present Roger with the winner's trophy and still looked like he could take some sets off a couple of the top one hundred men.
I'm still bummed that Rafael Nadal couldn't make it through to the final but since there are now questions about his knee and whether he'll be able to defend his Wimbledon title, my only concern is that he make sure he doesn't create a career threatening injury by returning to competition too soon.
During the men's final a whack job jumped out of the stands and ran on the court scaring the beejeezus out of Roger, but was soon tackled by security.
As Roger won match point, he feel to his knees and cried what must have been tears of joy and relief.
Just sayin'.
I like Roger, I think he's a class act and if Rafa couldn't win a fifth, I'm very happy Roger got his first. Congratulations to the GOAT: Roger Federer!

On the women's side, Svetlana Kuznetsova captured her second Grand Slam title by demolishing number one seed Dinara Safina. It was a one sided final that had Safina talking to herself and after serving terribly, yelling out to her coach, "Why am I such a chicken?"
I don't know Dinara, but you'll need to figure it out before being able to legitimately call yourself number one in the world.
Kuznetsova earned the title the hard way after having beaten Serena Williams in the quarters and not mentally collapsing as she sometimes does. So congratulations to Svetlana!
