"Idol" Chit Chat: Adam, Danny, Kris & Allison Smash the Standards

American idol

First of all, America and I are back on track.  Last week I said Lil and Anoop should go home and America agreed.

Next, can we just have Jamie Foxx mentor every week?  I loved watching him give the contestants really excellent advice.  That business with him in Danny Gokey's face was priceless.  I gotta do that next time I'm trying to inspire someone.

This week I decided I had to listen to all the performances twice.  Once with my eyes open and once with my eyes closed.  It helped me ditch my prejudices about the contestants' looks.  The people who benefited most from that this week were Kris Allen and Danny Gokey.  Danny pisses me off with those glasses and Kris often looks like such a lightweight, I don't give him the credit I should.

So here we go.

Best Of The Night:   Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey.  The reason Adam's going to win this competition is because of the kind of control he showed on those last notes of "Feeling Good."  That and his flawless skills as a performer.  Amazing.

As far as Danny, I don't love him but even I have to admit he blew the notes right off "Come Rain Or Come Shine.  He needs to send Jamie Foxx a big ol' thank you note.

Almost Brought Me To Tears:  Allison Iraheta.  Magnificent.  Fabulous song, "Someone To Watch Over Me," fabulous whiskey/smokey voice, what a talent!   And a Happy Birthday to the new seventeen year old!

Owner Of The "He Can't Win Award:"  Kris Allen.  Lovely performance of "Just The Way You Look Tonight."  He ain't winning but after tonight's show he just might have secured himself a recording contract.

Worst Of The Night:  Matt Giraud.  And he wasn't even that bad with his version of "My Funny Valentine."  It's just that everyone else was so much better.  I think he would have had a better shot if he'd chosen a song with more swing.  Something like "Mack the Knife."

Should Go Home:  Matt Giraud.

Will Go Home:  Matt Giraud.

And last but not least, big, big props to Ricky Minor, the band and the incredible backup singers.
