Unsung Creative Emmy Winners

Emmys

The Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday September 21st on ABC.  Everybody writes about the primetime awards, and next week I will be too.  But except for a quick roundup of which shows got how many, the Creative Emmy Awards get very little notice.

Well in case you didn't hear, they were held last week and I wanted to take note of some of the winners.  They're in no particular order and they only represent the jobs I know something about, and relate to shows I've seen.

Some winners were no-brainers like "The Tudors" for outstanding costume design, and "Mad Men" for hairstyling, art direction, cinematography and main title design.

Also nominated in the main title design award category were the team that designed the opening titles for HBO's "Bernard and Doris."  They definitely deserve honorable mention because though different stylistically from the "Mad Men" titles, the "Bernard and Doris" titles were gorgeous.  My friend and I actually commented on them as we watched.  So here's a mention for that team:  Garson Yu, Creative Director/Art Director; Synderela Peng, Designer/Art Director; Etsuko Uji, Designer/Animator; Edwin Baker, Designer.

Also deserving of honorable mention, Costume Designer John A. Dunn and the Assistant Costume Designer for the pilot of "Mad Men."  As anyone knows who watches the show, a big part of why the show works is the authentic, period look of each and every scene.  The hair, the makeup, the clothes, the set decorating---everything is meticulously recreated so the plot and characters can play out in a setting that's straight out of 1962.

And though I haven't seen "Breaking Bad" and I'm sure winner Lynne Willingham was very deserving, I hate to see the editors of Parts 2 & 3 of the "Lost" finale, ignored once again.  They are:  Henk Van Eeghen, Robert Florio, Mark J. Goldman and Stephen Semel.

Who knows, maybe next year.
