James Blake Beats Roger Federer, Serena, Venus Out of Singles at the Olympics

James Blake just pulled off the biggest upset of his career, beating Roger Federer at the Beijing summer Olympic Games, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

I watched it all live on my laptop on NBC Olympic website.  Thank God for the internet!  Right now Serena's in the third against Elena Dementieva.

But back to James.  Blake had never beaten Federer before in about a hundred tries and he let out a huge yell when Federer's return on match point went long.

James played a solid game and one advantage for him I think was the two out of three set format.  By winning that first set he gave himself the cushion he needed to let fly in the second.  And Federer didn't play his best when it counted.

Federer, who'll lose his four year old number one ranking to Spain's Rafael Nadal next week will now come into the US Open with even more question marks over his head.

Personally I think he needs a nice long vacation to recharge and then come back fresh.  That Wimbledon loss took more out of him than I think anyone realized and it's going to take him some time to get that famous Federer mojo back.

Ooops!  Serena Williams just lost to Dementieva 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.   In the third set, Dementieva raced ahead to a 4-0 lead and though Serena came back to 5-3, Dementieva used her third match point to put Williams away.

Late breaking news:  Venus Williams was just beaten by Li Na 7-5, 7-5 in front of a roaring Chinese crowd.

In the meantime James Blake is in the semis of the Olympics and who knows how far he can go now?  Congratulations James!!!
