"Desperate Housewives" Snap Recap: "Mother Said" (5/11/08)
In honor of Mother's Day, this episode highlights the stories of the mothers of Wisteria Lane.
Mike's mother, Adele comes to visit and gives Susan all kinds of hell. She's a southern lady who refers to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression and that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about Adele.
That and the fact that her mission in Fairview is to turn Susan into a suitable wife for her son. That means being a "chef in the kitchen, a maid in the living room and a whore in the bedroom." And from what Mike's told Mama, Susan's only mastered one of those. Heh.
Queen Bree and Edie declare all out war over Orson, of all people. Bree sabotages a house sale for Edie while Edie blackmails Bree when she finds out the secret parentage of Little Ben. Bree then confesses all to the other wives, and in a show of solidarity, they have a showdown at the Wisteria Lane OK Corral and freeze Edie out of their lives forever. A chastened Edie leaves town to go visit her own son.
Meanwhile at the Scavo house, or as it's becoming known, the house of Evil and Gullible Children, Tom and Lynette have hired a shrink to fix the family. Or rather, Tom thinks it's to fix the family, Lynette thinks it's to fix Kayla. 'Cause there couldn't be anything else wrong with Lynette's family, could there?
Kayla, however is not having it, so whenever Doc Dolan is around, she plays the loving, dutiful daughter who can't understand why Mommy hates her so. Doc Dolan suggests Lynette and Kayla spend some alone time together on a shopping trip, but that doesn't work too well, since Kayla is not above blackmailing Lynette to get that pretty new outfit she wants.
When she crosses the line by speculating about all the dangerous things she could convince Penny to try, a la P & P jumping off the roof, Lynette smacks her a good one. The first chance she gets, Kayla rats out Lynette to Doc Dolan, explaining how it's not the first time Lynette has hit her. The spawn of the devil, that one.
Carlos and Gaby are getting very chummy with Ellie The Drug Dealer. She's great for their marriage because they don't fight in front of her. She's helpful around the house, takes the blind man, er, I mean Carlos for walks in the park, and she brings Gaby flowers on Mothers Day, because she values their friendship so much.
When some unattended incense in Ellie's room sets off the smoke alarm, Gaby discovers the drugs and she and Carlos immediately go to the police. What they find is that Ellie is already under surveillance by undercover officers who've been pretending to be clients. Carlos and Gaby reluctantly agree to keep quiet until the sting operation is over.
Due to the recent arrival of Psycho Daddy, Kat Mayfair is ready to leave Wisteria Lane. Dylan says, no way, if Kat insists, she'll stay with Psycho Daddy. During a wonderful confrontation between Kat and Psycho Daddy on the street, Kat tells him that Dylan isn't his daughter, and since he's changed so much, she's no longer afraid to tell him that. Kudos to Dana Delany in this wonderfully acted scene. Psycho Daddy has met his match.
He, of course is pissed at this new Kat and takes some of Dylan's discarded gum to do a DNA test. Not only does Psycho Daddy find out that Dylan is indeed not his daughter, he also discovers after watching some home videos, that Kat's Dylan is not the same Dylan he taught as a kid to ride a bike. The young Dylan had a scar, the older Dylan does not.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are now circling over Kat's secret. We will be landing on it sometime during the two hour season finale next week.
The kiddie switch would explain why Dylan doesn't remember living on Wisteria Lane or Julie or Susan or anything else the young Dylan would.
When Psycho Daddy finds all this out, he stops calling Dylan "Princess" and tosses the poor, confused kid out of his apartment.
To top off this lovely Mother's Day episode, Susan gives birth a baby boy and Mary Alice tells us, "We celebrate the women who give us life and so much more. The ones who protect us at all costs. Who have the courage to fight those who would do us harm. We celebrate a mother's love which is constant, eternal and there from the very beginning.
Next week, the season finale. Be there.
